Starting 8th February until 8th April 2025, the Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation (YTAR) is accepting applications for the Tunku Abdul Rahman Scholarship (BTAR). As a former recipient of the scholarship, I absolutely convince anyone interested to send in their applications for this prestigious scholarship, and here’s why.
#1 The scholarship is open for all fields of study
When I started my degree in 2010, I explored and read through innumerable scholarships and found that most were geared for the science and technology fields. Scholarships for social sciences, arts and humanities were rare, until I stumbled across the advertisement for the BTAR scholarship, which stated that it was for all fields of study. It was almost unfathomable to me that such a scholarship existed, but where BTAR is concerned, I can attest to the fact that it really does cater to all fields. In my batch, those who were awarded the scholarship in 2011 were from a wide range of fields—from myself (language studies), to sports science, Islamic studies, engineering, law, medicine, you name it.
#2 YTAR does not have a minimum CGPA threshold
In my time, the scholarship was for high performing students, which meant that only students who had completed the first year of their degrees could apply. The threshold was a CGPA of 3.50, and at one point they raised it to 3.75 – and we had to maintain that CGPA until we completed our studies. For the past few years, YTAR has removed this requirement, and has awarded the scholarship to students regardless of CGPA, as they prioritize potential as well as other qualities like perseverance, leadership, and tenacity.
#3 The selection experience is unique
This is another one of those qualities of the BTAR that has stayed true since when I was awarded the scholarship in 2011. In my time, we were subject to a three days two nights selection camp, where we were subject to all sorts of teambuilding activities to demonstrate our qualities and potential. Don’t worry, they have discontinued this practice. However, we were also subject to an interview, and I am glad to say that this is still practiced today. The interview process is invaluable if you are a young semester one student. You’ll be learning a lot throughout the process, and even the process of filling in the application form is one that can help you grow. As a tip, if possible, don’t fill in the form by yourself. Get feedback from your academic advisor or a mentor so you know how best to draft a compelling application.
#4 YTAR does not discriminate
In recent years, YTAR has made the statement that it prioritises students from disadvantaged backgrounds, but that does not mean you shouldn’t try. Numerous students have been awarded the scholarship, provided they demonstrate potential for growth and leadership to contribute back to Malaysia. It doesn’t matter who you are, what your background is, and what field you’re from. Having assisted them with the selection process before, I can say with utmost confidence that YTAR is very meticulous when screening their applications. If you have a story to tell, then tell your story. Show your eagerness to learn, and your tenacity to overcome hardship. Show your passion to do good to your community, and explain your hopes and dreams and aspirations.
#5 The network you can create will be worth more than you know
If at all possible, don’t go through the application process alone. If you can find a few people who are also applying for the scholarship, befriend them, support each other, and maintain the network until well after you graduate. Reach out to YTAR scholars who have gone through the process and obtained the scholarship, and keep in touch with them, whether the scholarship is awarded to you or not. When I applied for the scholarship in 2010, I became really close friends with many students who applied for the scholarship, and we maintained such friendships even though some were not awarded with it. If you do succeed and earn the scholarship, then you’ll be part of a growing number of YTAR alumni who are now doing remarkable things in the world, and for the nation. Glue yourself to this community, and you’ll be grateful for the constant positive motivation they instill you with.
I wish you the best of luck for your application! May the odds ever be in your favour.
